Space School fancharacters, second batch. Get ready for a TL;DR backstory…
There was an interplanetary science vessel, the Madama Butterfly, that was to embark on an extra-galactic mission to the Andromeda galaxy to investigate an unusual, powerful transmission of almost certain advanced intelligent origin. The round-trip was supposed to take 7 years total, with the crew spending most of the time getting there and back in stasis.
The ship never returned, and the incident was considered for a long time the biggest scientific exploration disaster in history.
The transmission the crew was to investigate turned out to be a sort of devastating computer virus presumeably created to protect the inhabitants of the planet of origin from outside invaders. Once the crew finally deciphered the transmission about 2 years into the voyage, the virus was unleashed and the ship’s AI systems began to kill its own crew. A few emergency escape vessels were launched, as the main AI did not control these separate units. None of the vessels were ever found… except for one.
By sheer dumb luck, after drifting back towards the Milky Way for decades, Escape Vessel #3 was recovered just before it almost crashed into the space station near the Space School. There were three survivors in stasis, a human girl (Agape), a purple child (Mereza), and a pteryxling guy (Oryxo).
They had no family left save for each other, and due to the effects of long term hypersleep on a still-developing 4-year-old’s brain, Mereza suffered severe memory loss. She genuinely believes Agape and Oryxo are her real parents, despite the species difference and the fact that the two are not in love (yet?). Mereza is the daughter of a now-deceased scientist who was on the crew.
Agape is a brilliant mathematician and navigator, and was the youngest person on the team at the age of 16. She adores Mereza and dotes on her. Agape has a special permit to live on her own, though she is still financially supported by Oryxo. She was accepted to Space School with especially impressive test results in math.
Oryxo, 20, is a transmissions expert who discovered the signal while goofing around with his home-made radio at just the right time and place. He feels responsible for the whole mess, and is basically living for the only other two known survivors, who he treats like family. He is very protective of them, and will go apeshit if he believes they’re in danger. He officially adopted Mereza.
Age: Appears 16
Personality: Stoic, attempts to conceal her emotions for Mereza’s sake, philosophical, curious
Likes: Mereza and Oryxo, solving “impossible” equations, star mapping, catching up on all the history she’s missed, browsing electronics stores for the lastest gadgets
Dislikes: Thinking of her former family, the forward-only nature of time, any gadget that talks
- Is hilariously inept at using modern technology
- Is probably the only student who is technically older than most of the teachers
Age: Appears 4
Personality: Chipper, active, sweet, loud, a little obnoxious, blunt
Likes: Science books, playing with “Mommy” and “Daddy,” being cute and fawned over for it, being extremely annoying to Zeggy when on campus on the weekends, coloring books, Dude (on the rare occasions she sees him)
Dislikes: When people point out that she’s not the same species as “Mommy” or “Daddy,” vegetables, being stuck in a space station daycare so much of the time, boredom
- Is better at using modern tech than Agape
- Is clumsy
Age: Appears 20
Personality: Seems laid-back, obsessive with stuff he likes, protective, geeky
Likes: Mereza and Agape, radios and TVs and other signal-intercepting-stuff, building said stuff, gardening, talking about radios or gardening even if the other person isn’t interested
Dislikes: Danger, instability, uncertainty, unknown variables, AIs, himself
- Is currently employed as a campus gardener
- Has a thick accent but is still understandable
- Has moments of severely overreacting to possible (imagined?) dangers to Mereza or Agape
